Su forma es ovalada o redonda, de color rojo, amarillo o verde, dependiendo de la variedad. Su tama\u00f1o var\u00eda, entre los 5 y 10 cm de largo. De cascara espinosa, con peque\u00f1as agujas diminutas que deben retirarse antes de consumirse. Su pulpa es jugosa, de color que va del blanco al rojo, con muchas semillas comestibles. Su sabor es dulce y refrescante, aunque puede tener una ligera acidez. Se come cruda, despu\u00e9s de pelarla y retirarle las espinas. Se utiliza en la preparaci\u00f3n de jugos, batidos, mermeladas, gelatinas, helados y otros postres.
